Gato Barbieri began playing music after hearing Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." He played the clarinet, then the alto saxophone while performing with the Argentinean pianist Lalo Schifrin in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s, while playing in Rome, he also worked with the trumpeter Don Cherry. By now influenced by John Coltrane's late recordings, as well as those from other 'Free jazz' saxophonists such as Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders, the warm and gritty tone, which would become his trademark sound, began to develop. In the late 1960s, he was fusing musics from South America into his playing and contributed to multi-artist projects like Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra and Carla Bley's Escalator Over The Hill. His score for Bernardo Bertolucci's film Last Tango in Paris earned him a Grammy Award and led to a record deal with Impulse! Records. By the late 1970s he was working for A&M Records, and moved his music towards jazz-pop with albums like Caliente (with his best known song, Carlos Santana's Europa).
Though he continued to record and perform into the 1980s, the death of his wife Michelle led him to withdraw from the public arena. He returned to recording and performing in the late 1990s, playing music that would fall into the arena of smooth jazz. His music of the sound track for the film Seven Servants by Daryush Shokof earned him great ratings in Billboard magazine as the top Jazz sound tracks and Jazz music in 1997.

When singer Sade and her band of the same name were establishing themselves, their record company, Epic, made a point of printing "Pronounced Shar-day" on the record labels of their releases. Soon enough, the music had no problem with the correct pronunciation. With the breakthrough -Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten single "Smooth Operator" propelling the debut Sade album, Diamond Life, to the same spot on the -Billboard 200 chart in 1985, the band fast came to epitomize soulful, adult-oriented, sophisti-pop. Though only five more studio albums would follow during the next 25 years, the band's following abated only slightly, and each release was treated like a long-awaited public return of a mysterious yet beloved diva.
Born Helen Folasade Adu in Ibadan, Nigeria, about 50 miles from Lagos, Sade was the daughter of an African father and an English mother. After her mother returned to England, Adu grew up on the North End of London. Developing a good singing voice in her teens, Adu worked part-time jobs in and outside of the music business. She listened to Ray Charles, Nina Simone, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday, and studied fashion design at St. Martin's School of Art in London while also doing some modeling on the side.
Around 1980, she started singing harmony with a Latin funk group called Arriva. One of the more popular numbers that the group performed was an Adu original co-written with bandmember Ray St. John, "Smooth Operator." The following year, she joined the eight-piece funk band Pride as a background singer. Pride's opening acts often featured members of the band in different combinations. Pride and their off-shoots performed often around London and stirred up record company interest. Initially, the labels wanted to sign only Sade -- technically a trio featuring Adu, Stuart Matthewman, and Paul Denman -- while the whole of Pride wanted a deal. The members of Pride not involved in the Sade trio eventually told Adu, Matthewman, and Denman to go ahead and sign a deal. Adding keyboardist Andrew Hale, Sade signed to the U.K. division of Epic Records.
The band's debut album, Diamond Life (with overall production by Robin Millar), went Top Ten in the U.K. in late 1984. January 1985 saw the album released on CBS' Portrait label, and by spring, it had gone platinum on the strength of the Top Ten singles "Smooth Operator" and "Hang on to Your Love." The second album, Promise (1985), featured "Never as Good as the First Time" and "The Sweetest Taboo," the latter of which stayed on the U.S. Hot 100 for six months. Sade was so popular that some radio stations reinstated the '70s practice of playing album tracks, adding "Is It a Crime" and "Tar Baby" to their playlists. In 1986, Sade won a Grammy for Best New Artist.
Sade's third album was 1988's Stronger Than Pride, and featured their first number one single on the U.S. R&B chart, "Paradise," as well as "Nothing Can Come Between Us" and "Keep Looking." The fourth Sade album didn't appear for four years: 1992's Love Deluxe continued the unbroken streak of multi-platinum Sade albums, spinning off the hits "No Ordinary Love," "Feel No Pain," and "Pearls."
Matthewman, Denman, and Hale went on to other projects, including the low-key Sweetback, which released a self-titled album in 1996. Matthewman also played a major role in the development of Maxwell's career, providing instrumentation and production work for the R&B singer's first two albums. Sade eventually reconvened to issue Lovers Rock in 2000. The lead single "By Your Side" was a moderate hit, peaking at number 18 on the adult contemporary chart; the following summer, Sade embarked on their first tour in more than a decade and sold out many dates across America. In early 2002, they celebrated the tour's success by releasing a live album and DVD, Lovers Live. The mostly somber Soldier of Love was released in 2010.

Lenka” is the self-titled debut album by Australian singer/songwriter Lenka. It was released 23 September, 2008 through Epic Records. This is Lenka's first solo album after having been a member of the group Decoder Ring.

Those looking to satisfy a sweet-toothed craving for pop music should sink their teeth into this debut, which introduces Lenka as one of 2008's strongest newcomers. Horns, cellos, violas, keyboards, and vibraphones share equal space here, creating a sound that's at once lushly elegant and bubbly commercial. Having already cut her teeth with the Decoder Ring, Lenka now asserts herself as a competent vocalist and songwriter, penning three of the album's tracks while co-writing the remaining eight. "The Show," "Bring Me Down," and "Trouble Is a Friend" all brim with the cleverly crafted hooks of a Max Martin composition, and Lenka's fondness for internal rhyme helps tighten her phrases into concentrated balls of pop melody. The results are pure radio gold, perhaps alarmingly so, but Lenka's voice helps bring a sense of playfulness to what might otherwise be an exercise in all too perfect pop music. Singing in her endearing Australian accent, she shifts between the breathy sighs of "Don't Let Me Fall" and the measured, innocent confidence of "Like a Song." Quiet piano chords and a sparse trumpet riff provide the instrumental backing for the latter tune, and "Like a Song" shows that Lenka still shines when the thick instrumental padding is stripped away, making this candy-coated debut that much sweeter.

Cabezas de Cera (CDC) - Live USA (2010)

At 11 am on a Saturday morning in June 2009, 3 men from Mexico strode onto a stage in Bethlehem PA, carefully made their way around a plethora of stomp boxes, effects units, and instruments, and laid down a performance entirely unlike any other in NEARfest’s long history. Thankfully for those unable to attend the festival, Studio M’s cameras were rolling, and the end results can be seen and savoured on the newest release by Cabezas de Cera, CDC Live USA.

This album from CDC is more than just a concert DVD, though that may well be the part played most often. An audio CD accompanies the footage, giving fans an opportunity to relive the show without being tethered to their TV and DVD. Additionally, the DVD includes not just the band’s stunning and surprising performance, but a behind the scenes documentary on their 2009 North American tour, a short documentary filmed and edited by Adele Schmidt (of Romantic Warriors documentary fame), a gallery of NEARfest photography by Joe del Tufo, and an animated short titled ‘Azul Hiel Luhubre Nectar,’ with music by CDC.
Let’s start with the main program.

Studio M has done a great job in the past with capturing concerts and providing an end result that strays far away from the now standard MTV style editing that plagues so many videos these days. CDC’s release is no different…interesting angles are selected, shots are allowed to linger, and musicians are highlighted during appropriate times. For someone unsure of how this trio creates such a full sound on stage, the DVD will be enlightening. For those unable to figure out how they craft some of the unusual sounds that typify their music, one viewing will answer many questions, and perhaps raise just as many more. Video quality is excellent, even in darker scenes, and the minimalist staging suits a band where the attention is more on who is playing, and how they are playing, than anything else. DVD sound quality is excellent as well, with plenty of range and depth. Some of the sounds seem almost impossible to capture (I know this is exaggeration, but it’s true…when I heard them play live, I wondered how on earth anyone could bottle the lightning that was happening on stage; anything that could be processed was being processed), but it’s all there in crystal clear stereo. There is no 5.1 option, and while I could see how that might have been an interesting choice, the music does not suffer at all for it.

The behind the scenes documentary is an interesting piece of cinema verite; shot on hand held camcorder, it’s a rough and ready, bootleg-esque look at the tour from NEARfest through Philadelphia, shows in Washington DC, Wilmington Delaware, and Baltimore Maryland. It is perhaps a bit shocking to see a band that had previously played to nearly 1000 people playing a small club or bar with less than 100 people in attendance, but sadly such is the life of a touring progressive musician. Outside of the festival scene, the live music environment for someone not formerly (or currently) in one of the big six bands is almost non existent. Something like this is, for me, almost an essential viewing recommendation for people who seem to have no issues downloading music without paying…but that’s a story for another time.

Adele Schmidt’s documentary, I am assuming, is derived from material filmed for her Romantic Warriors film on progressive music. Without subtitles (sadly, I am far from fluent in Spanish and/or Mexican in any dialect) it’s hard for me to tell what the band is talking about, so I can’t appreciate it as much as I’d like. From an artistic standpoint it looks great, however, and makes me want to buy Romantic Warriors even more. The photo gallery is filled with excellent CDC photos from NEARfest, as mentioned above, by Joe del Tufo. Finally, the animated short featured in the extras is an interesting bit of film, with music I am assuming was specially written and recorded by CDC for the purpose. All the extras offer up a different look at the band, and as such should not be relegated to a single viewing and then left alone.
The audio CD covers the same material, obviously, as the DVD, and again sound quality is excellent. All of the official NEARfest recordings released thus far have been consistent in that regard, and it’s nice to know that the tradition continues here. It’s hard to pick highlights, as every song is so different from every other one. The brooding opener ‘Indomable’ is an excellent piece to start a show with, building slowly with mood and tension to match. ‘Peregrino’ features some wonderful 12 string guitar playing from Marucio Sotelo, while ‘Pretexto A Un Texto Fragmentado? may be one of the oddest songs ever played on a NEARfest stage, complete with frantic electronic drumming from Francisco Sotelo, sampled sounds that’d not be out of place on a dance record, and super-heavily effected vocals that go from depths Barry White only dreamed of, to high pitched tones reminiscent of a pot head pixie. ‘Mutacion’ features Sotelo on a strange hand made 3-stringed instrument that is alternately played like a slide guitar before offering up effected violin-like tones out of Jimmy Page’s darkest ‘dazed and Confused’ dreams. Throughout it all, Ramses Luna switches between whistles, saxophones, MIDI wind instruments, and vocals, adept on anything placed in his hands.

Cabezas de Cera’s performance at NEARfest 2009 was a special one, one that needed to be seen more than once to truly understand and get it all. Thankfully, we have this DVD and CD set to ensure that can happen.

filmed at the enchanting medieval castle in Castiglione Del Lago, Perugia, Italy. Over 2.5 hours of music with an
enthusiastic 5000 audience an eight-piece band and a top crew with six cameras to witness this unforgettable evening.
The energetic Ana Popovic Band at it's best offering up a little something for everyone including blues, rock, jazz and
funk. Also on this DVD an intimate interview as well as a couple of great acoustic bonus tracks shot at the enchanting
'Rocca Medievale', a medieval castle originally completed in 1247. The building with it's four impressive towers is one
of the finest examples of medieval architecture in Umbria, providing a beautiful view over the lake of Trasimo.

INXS formed in their native Australia in the late seventies and quickly established themselves as a great live band. However it wasn t until the early eighties that they began to break through as a recording act, first in Australia and then globally. Through the rest of the eighties and nineties they filled stadiums around the world and released a constant stream of classic hit singles and bestselling albums. This INXS concert from the Loreley Festival in Germany was filmed for the famous German TV series Rockpalast on June 21st 1997, just five months before the tragic early death of lead singer Michael Hutchence on November 22nd. The DVD captures INXS on top form with a setlist packed with classic songs including ten UK Top 40 singles.
